Hey everyone, as I am sure that you know by now, the knowledgeable folks here at Belly Up Fantasy Sports do a weekly NFL mock draft. The theme this time around was a fantasy football Superflex mock draft. Twelve of us got together for a 14 round draft. I had the 12th and last pick of the first round. This was my first Superflex draft. Let’s dive right in and I look forward to hearing from all of you!
Draft Selections: Quarterbacks
Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals, Pick: 4/1
In a superflex dynasty draft, it is all about the quarterback, since you can use two in a starting lineup. Who better to set up a team long term than the super talented Joe Burrow? Everyone has seen the videos from his last season at LSU. We have all seen the out-of-this-universe numbers. Just to recap- an undefeated season, won the championship, 5,671 yards and 60 TDs! No question that things will be just a tad more difficult in the NFL, but any dynasty team with Burrow on it is set up long term. And since that team would be mine, life is good!
Others:
Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins, Pick: 6/1
Just in case that Burrow doesn’t tickle your fancy (hard to imagine) perhaps Tua Tagovailoa will. The Dolphins first round pick has just as much, if not more, talent than Burrow. We know what Tua can do- in his last 24 college games, he has 6,806 yards passing, 73 TDs and just 9 interceptions. Everyone knows about the injury that ended his season.
We all know that we will have to see him on the field to gauge just how healthy he is and how good he can be. All reasonable points. But if things come together as they are projected, at least in his second season, who better to lead a dynasty team into battle than Burrow and Tua? I see no objections. Case closed.
Dwayne Haskins, Washington TBDs, Pick: 11/12
I must admit to being less than excited about this pick. That is because I was looking for a veteran QB in case the two rookies don’t work out this season. But, I didn’t like what was available at this point in the draft. That being the case, I decided on Dwayne Haskins. Admittedly, he had a less than stellar first season with only 1,365 yards passing with 7 TDs and 7 interceptions in nine games.
However, he did throw for four TDs in his last two contests. And, none other than Doug Williams himself, is high on Haskins. In fact, Williams said that in his opinion, Haskins has the best throwing arm of any quarterback selected in the last two years. Hey, if it works, this team would have three young and talented QBs to choose from for several seasons. If not, you hit the jettison lever and move on. No big loss.
Philip Rivers, Indianapolis Colts, Pick: 14/1
Speaking of veterans, Philip Rivers was my last selection in the draft. In many leagues, having this many quarterbacks is not allowed. That not being the case here, I got my experienced signal-caller in case all of the youngsters above go into a black hole this season. Rivers won’t be worth much for long but looks to show the Colts he can still do it at a high level this year.
Rivers was less than stellar in L.A. in 2019 and still threw for 4,615 yards. Additionally, he has started 16 games every season for the past 15 years. He has weapons in Indy and at worst, will be a top tier fantasy starter. I will certainly take that at the last pick. This is how a good fantasy football superflex mock draft should end.
Draft Selections: Running Backs
Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns, Pick: 2/1
The first pick of the second round was used on Nick Chubb. Thus, ground game for this fantasy team is off to a great start. In a less than outstanding season (to say the very least) for the Browns, Chubb was second in the NFL in rushing with 1,494 yards. He also scored eight touchdowns and averaged an eye-popping 5.0 yards per carry.
He is entering his third season, which means he could be an asset for quite some time. Chubb is also not lost in PPR leagues, having 36 catches a year ago. The entire Cleveland offense should hum along this season. It’s not inconceivable that Chubb could lead the league in rushing in 2020. If that turns out to be the case, all I can say is yes, please! The lead dynasty RB slot is secure.
Others:
D’Andre Swift, Detroit Lions, Pick: 3/12
Anyone that has been reading my articles will remember that I am a big believer in D’Andre Swift. That means not only for the future, but this season as well. Not surprisingly, he has been previously named as a draft riser this year. it should all come together for the rookie from Georgia and there was no way he was going to slide past me in this draft. Insert happy dance here.
Ke’Shawn Vaughn, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pick: 5/12
Similarly, the drum has been getting a steady beat from me since April regarding Ke’Shawn Vaughn. He, like Swift, is a serious draft riser. Look at that article and it will spell out exactly my feeling about the former Commodore. The fact that he was available in the fifth round of a dynasty draft was almost too much to believe. I got him, which caused even more happy dance moments.
Darrell Henderson, Los Angeles Rams, Pick: 10/1
Undoubtedly, there is less praise to heap on Darrell Henderson, which would explain why he was still sitting there in the 10th round. He has quite a battle on his hands for playing time with incoming rookie Cam Akers. All of that being said, Henderson still has a chance to win the job for himself, which would be huge in fantasy.
He will see time on the field at the very least. And it is possible that he could surpass his 147 yards 2019 total in one game this year. If that were to happen, wouldn’t he look good on a fantasy roster? That would be a yes, and yes. I am sure of my answer.
